"I bring knowledge of the resources available to Indigenous community members and use this to support patients throughout their hospital stay, and during discharge planning. My goal is always to advocate for culturally safe care, strengthen communication and help bridge the gap between the hospital and community supports." ~ Kim Viksush, Indigenous Liaison Nurse, CDH Celebrating Indigenous Nursing Day in Cowichan This year marked the fifth annual Indigenous Nurses Day in British Columbia, in honour of Charlotte Edith Anderson Monture, Kanyen'kehà:ka (Mohawk), born April 10, 1890, on the Six Nations Reserve. She became the first Indigenous registered nurse in Canada and the first Indigenous woman to gain the right to vote in a Canadian federal election because of the Military Voters Act in 1917. Edith served in World War I and was also the first Indigenous woman from Canada to serve in the United States military. We humbly and respectfully recognize the important work of care team members and traditional knowledge keepers who generously share their time and experience to advance Indigenous health and education in Cowichan. We are honoured to introduce Valerie Kuilboer, a proud Métis Nation member, Licensed Practical Nurse, and recently announced temporary Director of Indigenous Health, Health and Wellness for everyone Representatives from Island Health teamed up with the Stz'uminus First Nation at the Shell Road Health Centre for a fun afternoon all about health and wellness for everyone. Attendees learned about the myriad of services such as community care, mental health and substance use support, urgent care, urgent primary care and expanded services planned for the new hospital. Recruitment teams enjoyed answering questions and discussing job opportunities and career paths for all ages. Thank you for the invitation to join you in community!
